In the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route, which surrounds the capital city, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance located in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

נווה פריצקי The opening ceremony of the tunnel that is 2.1 kilometers long, was held in Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) and hundreds more cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a very well-known tourist destination due to its historical past. Elkin stated that, today, apart from its rich history, Jerusalem is also home to modern-day travelers. "The opening of this tunnel project is a further part of the expansion of the city of Jerusalem as well as its development into a dazzling tourist destination for all kinds of people in Israel as well as around the world."

The ministry of Elkin, which responsible for the project along with Jerusalem Municipality, declared that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels annually in all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism and in creating new ventures and attractions which connect the glorious historic time of our capital city and its future." I invite cycling enthusiasts to come and enjoy a modern and well-maintained cycling route that offers a view of the unique nature of Old Jerusalem."

The project was financed by Elkin's ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is an essential tool for achieving the vision to change the way we think about transport throughout Jerusalem." Elkin stated that the new tunnel is connected to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will join existing bike paths. It will also be paved in the various neighborhoods. This will encourage cycling and promote green transport in Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 in order to transfer the main sewers of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. The plant is located west of Sorek and is still used as an infrastructure tunnel.
